Founded in 1896, AFM represents over 110,000 professional musicians across the U.S. and Canada. AFM artists perform in every genre of American music including jazz, blues, country, rock, Latin, rap, classical, urban pop and gospel. AFM members are part of every facet of our nation’s musical scene. They are recording artists, tour bands, club date musicians, symphonic performers, big band groups, chamber music players and solo musicians. Included in the ranks of AFM members are dozens of Grammy award winners as well as others recognized the world over for their musical talents.
The AFM has negotiated national collective bargaining agreements with such major recording “label” companies as Sony, EMI Columbia and Time-Warner. These contracts set basic standards on wages, benefits—including pensions—and working conditions. AFM has over 250 chartered local unions and is affiliated with the AFL-CIO and the Canadian Labour Congress.
