Dear Mr. Gunnels:
Matthew Biggs of IFPTE brought the proposed Sanders-Grassley Employ American Workers in Banks amendment to my attention. On behalf of the Department for Professional Employees, AFL-CIO (DPE), permit me to state our strong support.
DPE has long opposed employer abuses of the H-1B program that cut jobs for U.S. workers, exploit foreign workers, drive down U.S. wages, and lead to the offshoring of U.S. technology and work. In a situation where U.S. taxpayers are funding the rescue of U.S. banks, nothing could be more appropriate than to protect against having federal money foster these abuses.
DPE is a coalition of 24 national unions that together represent over four million professional and technical workers in more than 300 occupations. Among them are workers in engineering, science, and information technology; the arts, entertainment, and media; education and information resources; health care; and public administration. The DPE is the largest association of professional and technical workers in the United States.
Please let me know if you need anything further. For DPE and its affiliated unions, please convey our thanks to Senators Sanders and Grassley for their leadership on this crucial issue.
